In 2024, 128 greyhounds died on Australian tracks — 5 at Wentworth Park. Over 11,000 greyhounds were injured – 391 of those at Wentworth Park.

I’m writing to urge you not to renew the greyhound racing lease at Wentworth Park when it expires in 2027, and instead return this valuable inner-city green space to the people of Sydney.

It’s impossible to justify reserving such a well-located public asset - situated near the CBD, universities, and the new Metro - to be reserved for greyhound racing and gambling. Instead, Wentworth Park could become a vibrant, community-focused precinct that includes parkland, sports and recreation, events, or even social housing. This would serve thousands, not just a shrinking racing industry that continues to be linked with cruelty and harm.

The NSW Government is meant to manage Crown land “in the public interest.” Community feedback overwhelmingly supports using this site for inclusive public use, not greyhound racing. Despite the industry’s attempts to reform, its cruelty is ongoing and has no place at Wentworth Park. In 2024 alone, on Australian tracks:

- 128 greyhounds died on Australian tracks – five at Wentworth Park.

- Over 11,000 greyhounds were injured – 391 of those at Wentworth Park.

We’ve already seen what’s possible. Greyhound racing is ending in Dapto as the site of the “Dapto Dogs” transforms into a thriving community precinct called “The Groundz” - offering food, live music, festivals, events, sport, and space for businesses and services. The Dapto Agricultural & Horticultural Society (owner of the land) last month confirmed it would not renew its lease to Greyhound Racing NSW, as continuing greyhound racing was “a fundamental barrier” to meeting the needs of the wider community.

Wentworth Park deserves the same future. Please honour the Government’s previous commitments to return use of this land to the public - choose a future for Wentworth Park that prioritises people, public space, and animal welfare.
