Justice for slain brumbies

On 11 September, the Liberal-National Government’s shooters killed an entire herd of brumbies in Kosciuszko National Park, in a manner so violent and unprofessional that it must be fully examined within Parliament. Long trails of blood showed the horses did not die quickly; they suffered long slow deaths, and the shooting caused three pregnant mares to spontaneously abort their foals. We have just learnt that the bloodbath didn’t end there, with further shootings being revealed.

This is a matter where individual opinions on brumbies are no longer relevant: no one deserves to die like that, no Government program ...

You are my local member and I am writing to you, as your constituent, to express my distress at the Liberal-National Government’s brumby bloodbath on 11 September – which has left me and the entire community shocked, outraged and traumatised.

I ask you to call for and support a Parliamentary inquiry.

In Parliament, Animal Justice Party MP Emma Hurst asked why this herd was killed, given they were in a “wild horse retention area” (where brumbies are meant to be conserved, under the Government’s Wild Horse Management Plan), and when so many brumby re-homers would have been willing to find them a loving home.

She has not yet received an answer, and I too hope you will pursue answers as to why the Liberal-National Coalition has contravened its own Plan.
