I am writing to urge you to vote against The Local Land Services Amendment (Miscellaneous) Bill 2020.

We already know that koalas are on the brink of extinction following the Black Summer bushfires. With the majority of surviving koalas living on private land, passing this Bill and allowing their habitat to be decimated at the discretion of private landholders, corporations and agribusiness is callous and unconscionable.

Further, the recent Legislative Council inquiry into koala populations outlined the severe dangers koalas in NSW face without stronger government protections, and produced a report with 42 recommendations based on expert advice.

This Bill not only ignores this advice, but destroys koala protections that have been in place for decades.

Before your vote, I urge you to read the inquiry report and take into account these key recommendations:

- That the NSW Government amend the Local Land Services Act 2013 to reinstate legal thresholds so that its application improves or maintains environmental outcomes and protects native vegetation of high conservation value.

- That the NSW Government assess the interaction between legacy Private Native Forestry plans and koala plans of management to ensure core koala habitat is protected.

- That the NSW Government urgently approve comprehensive koala plans of management previously submitted to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment in a timely and transparent manner.

- That the NSW Government fund and support local councils to conserve koala habitat, including by identifying pockets of urban bushland to include in the State's protected area network.

- That the NSW Government urgently investigate the utilisation of core koala habitat on private land and in State forests to replenish koala habitat lost in the bushfires.

Time is running out for koalas here in NSW, but you have the power to protect these iconic native animals. Don’t be a part of a parliament that has signed off on their extinction.
