Already the NSW Government is allowing for Kosciuszko's brumbies to be trapped and transported to knackeries. They do not deserve this fate.

Our government must urgently invest in research and trial studies for immunocontraceptive darting. Something we know has been used effectively in the United States as an integral part of the management of wild horses in similar terrain to that of Kosciuszko for over 15 years.

I am writing to you to urge you to stop killing brumbies in Kosciuszko National Park by condemning them to a cruel death in knackeries across Australia.

Trapping and slaughtering these innocent animals is not only inhumane, but it is the first step toward returning to the bloodbath of aerial culling. Neither of these options provide a long term solution for successfully reducing horse numbers in Kosciuszko National Park, they simply add to the death toll following this summer's horrific bushfires.

These brumbies have lived in Kosciuszko National Park for the past 200 years. These are animals that did not arrive in the park of their own free will. They are here, because we brought them here. We cannot make them suffer for our mistakes.

While I am deeply concerned about the welfare and survival of Mount Kosciuszko's native flora and fauna, I am equally concerned with the welfare of the horses who currently call the national park their home.

Fertility control is central to humanely and successfully managing the population of wild horses in NSW, and has been proven to work in terrain similar to that of Kosciuszko in the United States. Yet this effective and humane answer remains under-researched by our government in favour of adhering to cruel, lethal and ineffective short term "solutions".

I urge you to call on the government to invest in research in this area, invest in a comprehensive, large scale trial, and invest in a proper long-term solution.

Please help save these brumbies from slaughter AND protect our native environment.
