Greyhound racing is on its last legs around the world and it’s time NSW joined the growing list of governments putting animal welfare ahead of gambling industry profits.

The U.S. now has just one commercial greyhound racing track left, and politicians from both major parties are urging Australia to follow.

Meanwhile, here in NSW, 17 dogs died on racing tracks in 2024. Over 4,200 on-track injuries were reported. And millions in public money continue to prop up this cruel industry. The statistics keep getting worse: in the first half of 2025, at least 26 greyhounds have died after NSW racing incidents, with almost 2000 injuries recorded - the highest injury rate in Australia.

NSW is fast becoming one of the last jurisdictions on earth to still permit commercial greyhound racing.

We were so close to ending greyhound racing in 2016. The facts haven’t changed. The cruelty hasn't stopped. In fact, it's worse.

I am writing to express my concern, shared by many in our community, about the ongoing practice of greyhound racing in New South Wales.

Tasmania has announced it will phase out greyhound racing, ending public funding and shutting down the industry, with Premier Jeremy Rockliff citing animal welfare concerns and community expectations. This will make Tasmania the second jurisdiction in Australia to ban greyhound racing, with the ACT implementing a ban in 2018.

In Australia and around the world, governments are recognising what Australians have long known: that greyhound racing involves systemic animal cruelty and has no place in a modern society. NSW is becoming an embarrassing outlier. It's time for NSW to move forward and lead with integrity.

Global Greyhound Racing Reform Timeline -

New Zealand – December 2024
The NZ Government announced a phase-out of greyhound racing following repeated evidence of animal welfare failures and public outcry.

Wales (UK) – February 2025
The Welsh Government committed to ending greyhound racing due to serious and ongoing welfare concerns.

Arkansas (USA) – 2025
Greyhound racing ceased entirely in the state, leaving only one U.S. jurisdiction (West Virginia) with commercial races.

Tasmania - August 2025
The Tasmanian Premier announced the phase-out of greyhound racing due to animal welfare concerns, and community expectations.

NSW’s Shameful Timeline -

In 2016, following the McHugh Inquiry’s findings of systematic cruelty, from mass killings to live baiting, then–Premier Mike Baird announced a ban on greyhound racing. It was a bold and compassionate decision. But that decision was shamefully reversed.

And now we know things haven’t improved. They've gotten worse. The damning whistleblower report from the former Chief Veterinary Officer of Greyhound Racing NSW, Alex Brittan, last year confirmed that systemic cruelty, mass deaths and deception over rehoming figures are still rife within the industry.

The Brittan report prompted Greyhound Racing NSW’s CEO to resign, and saw the NSW Government launch yet another inquiry into the greyhound racing industry. In July 2025, the Drake Inquiry into Greyhound Racing NSW reported to the Racing Minister – and now the NSW Government is withholding the Report.

In 2024 alone, 128 greyhounds died on Australian tracks - including 17 in NSW. A staggering 11,445 track injuries were recorded, including 4,236 in NSW. These numbers represent real animals suffering for the sake of gambling profits.

While Tasmania, the ACT, and other parts of the world are acting, banning greyhound racing, ending betting platforms and phasing out the industry entirely, NSW is standing still. Or worse, moving backwards.

I urge you now: don’t let more dogs die because of government cowardice. Please stop public funding and subsidies towards this cruel, declining industry and outlaw greyhound racing for good.
