NSW Labor must stop supporting battery cage hens

Across Australia, up to 12 million ‘battery’ hens are imprisoned in small cages to provide consumers with “cheap eggs”. The majority of these tortured birds are found right here in New South Wales.

Despite knowing this, both Labor and the Liberal/National party have decided to ignore community concern and all expert evidence from welfare professionals by supporting the cruel battery cage egg industry.

And now NSW Labor is trying to make the situation even worse than allowing cages to continue.

Labor's amendments to the Inquiry report support the industry lying that ‘conventional cages’ were being phased out and replaced by ‘furnished cages’ with a definition eerily similar to the battery cage - 550 cm of space per hen, imprisoned inside a cage, with no evidence of welfare improvements.

We need to take urgent action.

I am writing to you to demand the NSW Labor Party retracts its support for the cruel battery cage egg industry. Your Party cannot continue to ignore community concern and all expert evidence from welfare professionals.

Like many shocked voters across NSW, I am further horrified that Labor's amendments to the "Use of Battery Cages for Hens in the Egg Production Industry" Inquiry Report support the industry lying about ‘conventional cages’ being phased out and replaced by ‘furnished cages’.

The definition of 'furnished cages' that NSW Labor is supporting appears almost identical to the battery cage - 550 cm of space per hen, imprisoned inside a cage, with no evidence of welfare improvements. It is shameful that your Party would go even further in supporting this animal cruelty by aiding industry's desire to lie to the public about the way hens are treated in our State.

If NSW Labor continues to support battery cages, millions of hens will be forever deprived of their natural behaviours, living on hard wire flooring, never able to stretch their wings, and facing a lifetime of broken bones, osteoporosis, stress and frustration.

NSW Labor must change their position on cages and the Labor Shadow Minister for Agriculture who made these shameless deals with industry must resign immediately.

My community will not tolerate any Party who condones animal cruelty in NSW.
