The Labor Government has just announced that they plan to dump the outdated, archaic, cruel and ineffective shark nets back in our beaches on 1st September.

Dear Minister Moriarty,

I am writing as a concerned citizen to ask you to protect our marine life and our community and keep shark nets out of our beaches.

Currently, the deployment of shark nets reflects an outdated approach that contradicts the principles of science, evidence-based research, and community safety.

Extensive research has demonstrated that shark nets are ineffective at safeguarding swimmers from shark encounters. They create a false sense of security as numerous shark species can easily navigate through or around them. In fact, more than half of the sharks captured in these nets were found on the beach side. Alternative strategies, such as drone surveillance, patrolled beaches, and swimmer education, have proven to be more effective in ensuring safety.

Shark nets indiscriminately trap and kill a myriad of non-target species, including dolphins, turtles, and rays. This has severe repercussions for our delicate marine ecosystems. Alarming statistics from the 2022/2023 season reveal that 90% of animals caught in shark nets were non-target species, 26% of those were species classified as either threatened or protected marine animals under Australian laws.

The suffering endured by animals caught in these nets cannot be ignored. A staggering 63% of all animals ensnared met a tragic fate due to entanglement. Their demise is slow and excruciating as they struggle desperately to free themselves. Shockingly, 100% of dolphins caught in the nets perished, and 50% of entangled turtles suffered a similar fate.

I urge you to consider the overwhelming evidence it is time to abandon this antiquated approach to beach safety and embrace more effective, humane, and environmentally responsible alternatives.
